Courses
Learn at the meeting point of biotechnology, AI and engineering
SMBI is building a community of students, researchers and professionals in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, physics, mechatronics and automation. Our courses give you the skills to join it, and our international projects give you a place to use them.
One community, five fields
Today's problems, such as clean water, sustainable agriculture and precision medicine, do not belong to a single discipline. A biologist needs to read sensor data, an engineer needs to understand a living system, and both need to know how to train a model.
Our courses are built around that idea. Each one is practical, taught in small groups, and connected to real research and project work.
Biotechnology
-
Introduction to biotechnology
The core ideas of modern biotechnology, from molecular tools to industrial and environmental applications.
Beginner
-
Bioprocesses and fermentation
How microorganisms are grown and controlled to make useful products, and how to monitor a process.
Intermediate
-
Environmental biotechnology
Wastewater treatment, nature-based solutions such as constructed wetlands, and water reuse in rural areas.
Intermediate
Artificial intelligence
-
Python for scientists
Programming from scratch, with a focus on cleaning, exploring and plotting scientific data.
Beginner
-
Machine learning for biological data
Classification, regression and clustering applied to real biological and environmental datasets.
Intermediate
-
AI for sensors and monitoring
Using models to detect anomalies, predict water quality and support decisions from sensor streams.
Advanced
Physics
-
Applied physics for instrumentation
The physics behind the measurements: optics, electronics, heat and fluids in laboratory and field devices.
Beginner
-
Modelling and simulation
Turning a physical or biological system into equations, then solving and testing them on a computer.
Intermediate
Mechatronics
-
Sensors and actuators
Choosing, wiring and calibrating the components that let a machine sense and act.
Beginner
-
Embedded systems with Arduino
Building small connected devices that collect data and control motors, pumps and valves.
Intermediate
Automation
-
Industrial automation and PLC
Programming controllers to run and supervise industrial and laboratory processes.
Intermediate
-
Control systems and IoT
Feedback control, remote monitoring and smart irrigation or water-treatment systems.

International projects
Alongside teaching, we take part in international research projects that combine these fields. SMBI is involved in CIRQUA, a Horizon Europe project that upgrades constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment in rural Mediterranean areas.
It brings together nanostructured filters, photocatalytic modules, nitrogen-fixing plants, sensors and automation, precision irrigation and artificial intelligence, so that treated water and plant biomass can be reused for irrigation and fertilisation.
Our courses teach the skills these projects need, and students and members can then take part in similar work with partner universities and laboratories.
